Drama- at what cost?

I have been putting up scheduled posts as there has been a lot of drama going on here.

We have a bike race that has been held the past 4-5 years in our downtown. It closes off the roads for a Sunday. Every year the owner of the Antique store and now the newly opened place where I have a booth - gets very upset and fights the race with city council. He speaks alot of half truths to the paper and won't compromise on anything. This year proved to be no different. But even though I am a vendor there I did not support his stance. I felt that even though the streets were closed on one Sunday out of the year it was a good thing as it brought tons of new people to our downtown that could possibly come back and shop later upon discovering it. I strongly feel that any good publicity for a small town is awesome. And anytime you can lure people down to appreciate and discover it is a wonderful thing. Yes sales might have been lost that one day but the overall good outweighs that.

Well the city council agreed with my and other opinions and the race will continue for 5 more years without this yearly drama playing out in the papers and such.

I on the other hand will not play out in the downtown.

The owner of the place where I have my space does not feel that the vendors are entitled to their own opinion. That we do not live in a free country where we are entitled to freedom of speech. He has since this started blocked me from the business face book page thus not permitting me to promote my business, he has refused to answer any of my questions I sent them via email to him and general management about a newly instilled lay away plan. And as of this morning he has told me to vacate my space by February 23.

Really I am appalled, I am one of the better sales vendors there, I am consistent in my sales, my space is always full- not so much now but we did just come off of Christmas and I am playing catch up. I also have volunteered there for hours to decorate, help for open house. But all that means nothing because I supported an event that my family participates in every year which directly opposed his opinion.

So, I have been dealing with all of this and my blog has paid the price for it. For that I apologize.

I will be busy getting tons of furniture painted for the upcoming 3 shows I have and now I will have to come up with time to dismantle the booth that we spend so much time building to make the colony look good.

Sad place that sends me packing because I have a difference of opinion- ironic though that my husband works for the military that affords him the right to treat me this way. But then again- he fought the closing of streets for a Military Appreciation Parade also..so it shouldn't surprise me at all.

So, I will be busy taking this :

Freezing but thinking of { SPRING }

Baby it's cold outside.

We went from sunny in 60's on Sunday when everyone on the block was outside working to lordy lordy it's windy and in the 20-30's yesterday and today.

But on that glorious Sunday we did some preparing.

I got the idea to move the kids fort space out of the sunny area and put it into the yard.

Why?

Because that area gets the most sun as we are surrounded by neighbors trees.

Lets backtrack..I have been going more towards natural foods. We buy farmers market and last year we were in a food co-op where we received a large box of food on a weekly basis from area farmers. We have dabbled in gardening here and there but this year we are going for broke so to speak. We are going to grow our own and we will can and freeze all that we can.

After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in September it has come to my attention how many canned items are overflowing with sodium and sugar..both no-no's on the diabetic and high blood pressure diet.

So au natural is how we are going to try to roll.

That being said we needed a large area to garden thus the rearranging of the back yard.

We got that fort moved, hubby tilled the whole area- we had tons of leaves in there so he tilled them in to feed the soil. We put up a fence to keep the dog out when we start growing things. (This fence was put back up in the exact spot it was in when we took it down about 6 months ago. Nothing new was done to it)

And this is how the area looks now:

I will paint the fence white to match the other fence. It will have climbing roses planted along the fence with sweet peas to cover and look wonderful.

Along the two side fences it will hopefully have some espaliered apple and pear trees planted.

It will need raised beds and walkways and hopefully this weekend when it warms up I can plan those out.

It is a large area so that is why the back is being reserved for a green house. A home built one using recycling as out main source. Old doors, windows etc.

But I have visions of what it will look like and of course pinterest helped me get some to share.

Just a heads up that I am once again switching things up on here. I tried one blog with business, fun stuff, projects and family. Then I was perusing all the "big" blogs out there and noticed that they kept their business stuff separate so I thought I should. But after trying to do two blogs I am fully aware that it is too much for me and also not as fun. I like including the sporadic family stuff - it is me.

I am first a mom, then a business person. I do projects first in my home then for business. So, the blog should be that too.

So, I am going back to being me..it may not be what "the big girls" do but it is me.

That being said- there may be lots of updates on the feed as I import the family posts..so bear with me. I'll get them all done by tomorrow morning.

what changes are you making on your blog? And do you try to keep it strictly one thing or mesh it all together?

- Business -

1. Keep blog updated at least 3 times a week.

2. Open an etsy store.

3. Keep ahead of the ball in the making of items to sell.

4. Take a photography class with a photoshop elements class.

5. Do some shows at Olde Tyme Marketplace's Market Sundays.

- Personal -

1. Walk every Mon- Fri for 30 minutes

2. Monitor my sugar levels better

3. Take more time to do play things with kids

4. Eat healthier for all of us

5. Save more money than spend.

- House -

1. Remodel the last full bath

2. Finish board and batten upstairs

3. Install french doors to den

4. Paint all walls off white

5. Repaint kitchen floor

I started to make pins - they were originally made to be on my bags but so many people were asking for them separately that I made a bunch for fall and Halloween. You can see them here.

July 2011

July marked the time to get on the ball to get ready for the Fall Cameron Show. And something else was in the works.. a new booth space for September.

My burlap table runners are always a hit so started those in July.

Another big hit at the fall show is the pumpkins. I have to say they are popular but seriously you can make too many pumpkins. I had them everywhere. You can see more pictures here.

April 2011

These were when I started creating a soft line to go with the furniture I sell. I adore sewing just not all the time. And I made many of these tote bags and loved them all.

I guess everyone else did as they sold out at my Cameron Spring Show.

My favorite in May is always the spring show in Cameron. I adore the show. It is a lot of work but just like having a baby - you forget about that once it is over and start planning the next one. Read about it and see more pictures here.

Olde Tyme Marketplace part two

At the end of the previous post I had shown you basically most of the front room. But not all there was so much to take in. Now I'll share the back/side room with you- still more eye candy to behold. You can see part one of this tour here.

Look at all that is going on in this display? I told you layers upon layers.

Burlap coffee bags, ticking, ahhh just gorgeous.

We both loved this laundry cart though neither of us left with it :(

This was Ashley's love. She wanted it and zoned in on it only to see the tag:

"not for sale at this time".

Funny Ashley said, "wonder if it is for sale at 2?"

Beth told us it is for her office but if it doesn't work then it goes up for sale.

This is the cabinet I measured to see if it will work in that spot in my bathroom that I can't find anything to fit in and I bought something out of this photo. Can you guess?

And this sled, I am still wondering if it was a bad move to leave it there. I LOVE IT.

That was our fun for Sunday. We have decided that we need to go out again- Ashley has not been to Sleepy Poet, Gibson Mills, Cline's or even to an Ikea. The Charlotte area is beckoning her to come explore so we will plan more trips in the future.

Until then we can look at our pics from Olde Tyme Marketplace and remember the good stuff.

I finally had the pleasure of making it down to Olde Tyme Marketplace owned by Beth. I had been a follower of her blog for a long time and I even tried to visit the store when my bestie Liz was here in October but we arrived right after closing time. This time I took a friend from the neighborhood, Ashely, who loves chippy, white, peely, vintage stuff just like I do. It is a bit of a drive from our little town to Marshville- about 2 hours. But we chatted the whole time.

Then we walked in and saw this:

First the basket is enough right? But how cool to have almost neutral candy canes..I am so going to incorporate this into my house next year.

All of the displays were amazing. Ashley said it best: "this is the kind of store you have to wander around in many times so you can take it all in" Very true.

She had street signs that all had Christmas evergreen tree names. Loved that little touch.

Lots of chippy, rusty treasures to want to buy.

Amazing cabinets and things hanging from the ceilings. It was a sensory overload but in a good way. We wandered and looked all over the place.

Her displays were layer upon layer of wonderful items. Beth certainly has the talent for displays..they were beautiful and unexpected all at the same time.

Do you see that white wagon? I love that. Need to find an old wagon and paint it white.

That large scale is a must have but where to put it? hmmm

I adore this bucket..wouldn't it look good with a bucket full of hollyhocks?

And these sure made me wish for spring. I love to garden.

These windows with the words on them were wonderful. I wish I had a place to put them. And all of her greenery had bells on them. Not just plain old bells, but white glittered bells. Yes glittery whiteness - ahh heaven.

Check out that cabinet- see all that chippy peely whiteness?

That's about half of what we saw..I will show the other room later on.

And I'll show you what I brought home too.

Now don't you want to go hang out here?

Beth was wonderful. She was warm, friendly and funny on top of it all.

She spent time explaining her Sunday at the market events she holds April - October and she even had me agreeing to do them.

Now I have more stuff to work on but it is all good.

{pumpkin time for Miss Mustard Seed}

I was fortunate to get to meet up with Marion- Miss Mustard Seed over the Thanksgiving holiday.

We met with a bunch of other Raleigh area bloggers and hit the flea market and other shopping places.

Marion asked us if we had any left over pumpkins that she could have as she waited too long to get any and she needed them for some photo shoots for HGTV.

We had some and I texted her a pic to see if they were what she wanted. Of course, Sophie had to be in the picture:

For the past couple of years we have tried to make place cards for the big family dinners.

One year I made them for Thanksgiving and my sister said- thanks set the bar high.

She then made adorable ones for that Christmas.

This year Sophie made them. They had done some at school and she asked her teacher for a copy of the pattern. She did them all for our meal.

She is very serious when concentrating. And can't do a thing without that tongue out.

So THANKFUL for that little stinker.

The Carolina Artists' Colony had a Christmas Open house and of course I volunteered to do too much.

It was the evening of the day Liz went home - so I was a bit bummed but we had to get it all there and set up.

My little helper and partner in crime- Sophie came to help.

She got bored once it was all set up so one of the artists - Taylar painted her face for her.

She wanted a butterfly.

I think she likes it. Don't you?

I had big plans on getting a lot decorated this year but then with the booth and kids - well that all changed.

I decided to do "less is more".

And I have to say I am enjoying the small displays that just shine on their own without any over the top, elaborate scheme.

Our small eat-in area off the kitchen has so much light that I just wanted something small and simple.

I thought just a stick in my champagne bucket and put something on it...hmmm what?

Then I received the most amazing gift in the mail from my Canadian friend Heather from Inspire Me Heather. We met on the Cottage Living boards that then switched over to Cottages and Bungalows boards. We have sent gifts and surprises to each other for a couple of years. This year she sent me a bag of miniature vintage mercury glass ornaments.

LOVE THEM.

And they are just what my little stick needed.

Aren't they just adorable?

Thanks Heather so much- I love them.

Now the stick, limb, twig whatever you call it- was from a dead dogwood.

I just sprayed it with some white paint to lighten it up.

Stuffed it in a piece of Styrofoam and covered it with some burlap.

All and all - simple.

Just what I was going for.

all Christmas Crafted out....

Well I have been crafting for Christmas since August.

Yes, when you have a booth space, business, etsy shop etc you are on the retail calendar and sometimes that basically sucks.

When everyone else is getting into the swing of "the spirit of the season" we are tired of it.

I declared myself done today. I took in my last Christmas items to my booth and informed them that it is all I am doing.

I will not be accepting any more special orders nor making any more Christmas items.

I am cleaning up the studio- packing away all the holiday fabric, papers, etc. Boxing them up till next summer. I am clearing it to get a nice clean slate.

Then I am going to get some projects cut out and ready to go for Valentines Day.

But the studio will close down for all business as of end of day on the 21st.

I want to just hang with the kids, bake cookies, watch Christmas movies and just be "mom".

These are the last items I took in today:

One Christmas sheet music wreath.

And then I took in two sheet music wreaths for the New Years.

So I might be a bit scarce on here till after Christmas but then I'll be showing some fun Valentine crafts that I am making for the space.

Every year since we have moved to North Carolina we have been so fortunate that my best friend Liz from Texas- God's Country, has been able to come out and visit.

She usually has come twice a year- spring and fall.

She has been here right after Sophie was born and a couple of times with her hubby.

Most times she has planned them around my Cameron Day shows but this time her baby got married then so she came out around Halloween- beginning of November. It is always a great time but is usually so short and believe me I cry every time we take her back to the airport.

We are always so busy and forget to take pictures- well and she and I hate having our pictures taken- haha

But I got this one before we left to take her to the airport..

After meeting Santa for the first time we walked around and enjoyed the lights.

Then of course it was time to get cookies and hot chocolate.

And it wouldn't be a good time if we didn't give mom a stupid photo.

Up until this year we have no photos of the youngest two with any holiday characters.

Why?

They have always been terrified of costumed people-

be it Monkey Joes or Chuckie Cheese - they don't like them.

We went to look at the lights at the local nursery and Santa was there.

Just like every other year, I asked," do you want to go see Santa? " .

But to my surprise, Sophie said - " I'll try".

So proud of them. I just wonder what crazy things they asked for.

Another tree skirt- burlap

Well these have sold so quickly - even had one as a special order- that getting a photo of it is hard. This is the last one I have in the booth and it is on a pedestal coffee table to give my pathetic 6 foot tree some height.

Am I the only one who just could not bring herself to buy a huge tree for a display piece? Anyway- it doesn't show well here but I figured I'd share it anyway.

I figure if it doesn't sell then it is fine- she would look wonderful under my tree.

I did sell a special order one to a friend along with a very long burlap table runner for her 9 foot long table (and it doesn't have a leaf- wowza). Her house is to die for. I am hoping she will let me photograph it and share it with you all.

What kind of tree skirt do you use? Is it a formally sewn one or just a nice blanket underneath?

Now in retail you know you have to decorate early and really push the holiday.

I have tons of spindle trees for sale in the booth. I loaned a 10 foot tree for the store to use in the window but as I put up multiple trees at home I figured my booth space deserved the same touch.

So, off to wally world for a cheap unlit tree. No cords to deal with and smaller for the space.

I made the drop cloth tree skirt for her (am making some bigger ones out of burlap to sell), I also made her some book page garland to add some light color and texture. Then I hung all my glittery ornaments to shine.

I think she looks rather nice.

She's not too full so as more ornaments get finished I can keep added them on.

What do you think? Is she missing something?

a drop cloth skirt?

Well a drop cloth tree skirt that is.

I was making some items for my tree for the booth and then thought. Well every tree needs a skirt. I didn't want to buy anything but use what I had on hand. I saw a pile of cut up drop cloth and said what the heck.

I made it with two rows of ruffles - well cause every skirt needs some ruffles right?

No hemming, no finishing off ends..just tattered and pretty.

Guess you could say she is Tattered and Timeless - pretty appropriate to my space right?

Well I am always inspired by the blog world. By all the new friends I meet and their creativity. I have a great friend who I have never met- well not yet. Hopefully some day we will. She first inspired me to use doll parts in displays. My neighbor found some old dolls in pieces in one of his dumpster dives and thought of me- how sweet.

I cleaned them up and now they are my fave Halloween decoration. I put them in a large lidded jar. They creep other people out but not me. They make me smile- warped I know.

But Amy of Vintage Market Place will do that to you. She thinks so far out of the box that it amazes me at all the items she creates. Check out her blog and etsy store.

She has been making and selling her version of the book page garlands for some time now.

I thought I'd try it one day as I was getting frustrated with some fabric craft.

I whipped up two small ones to decorate my tree in my booth.

I have to tell you - it was so much easier than a fabric project and a nice break from those.

Bloggers unite at the Raleigh Flea Market..

It was a great day yesterday.

I awoke early with anticipation of meeting non other than Marian of Miss Mustard Seed.

I have followed her blog forever so getting to do what she does best- junking was going to be great. Let me explain, I have always loved dirty, old, crusty, rusty, peeling painted objects that show potential. It is hard to find kindred souls who like that - especially women. I have a best friend from Texas who does so I get a fix twice a year when she comes out but otherwise it is a lonely endeavor.

But I was sure we'd meet others with this trip.

So, after me holding up the group as I entered the wrong gate and was at the opposite end- we made introductions then hit the ground running looking for "treasures".

It's a good thing that Kristen brought her rolling bag as she scored a wonderful old but heavy typewriter.

Rie was a wonderfully nice person. I enjoyed talking to her about her house and just life. She bought this awesome wicker table - for only $50. It will look great with her house.

This is when Mekala caught up with us (the lovely one with vibrant red hair). She had done some shopping before she found us- three huge but wonderful trunks. She, I found out lives very close to me- Vass and is prior military too. What a small world.

Then we all went to SuzAnna's Antiques and the little shops with them. We took a group photo - well some did. So, I am borrowing Marian's.

I enjoyed meeting all of these ladies. And I hope we can get together and do it some more. We all need to hit Clines and Gibson Mills together.

Glitter letters

I have to say, I waited too long to follow Marian of Miss Mustard Seeds advice.

Yes she is all knowing and totally right.

German Glass Glitter is the only glitter you should ever use.

I have used the store brand. I have even popped for Martha Glitter but all of those pale in comparison to the real deal. They don't even come in the same ball park.

I took Marian's advice and ordered some from Meyers Imports and I will never go back.

I did some letter magnets - all from Miss Mustard Seeds inspiration. I kind of used the letters I had and also did some bird and snowflake ornaments. I love it.

Don't mind the nasty table they are on- that dear table sees all my crafting messes.

What a glorious glittery mess.

And I have to say- I was the bus driver of the bus- "I hate glitter and wont' work with it ever" I used to look at my kids preschool art projects with glitter in the driveway and then put them in the trash as I didn't want the crud reproducing all over my house.

I have been converted people..I am now a glitter fiend.

a FOLK feature- kind of

Imagine my delight when I opened the mail box and this was inside.

I had been patiently waiting for mine to arrive. So many others had received theirs and were posting about it on face book. I even was bothering poor Hillary as to the location of mine. But it arrived all nice in my mail box.

I grabbed it and sat down on the front porch steps and started to look through it.

Ohh look at this page of fun Christmas items.

When -what the heck?

That is my name.

That is my cone I made for Christmas.

I'm in FOLK magazine and I had no idea.

I was so excited and my daughter about screamed.

How cool.

I have two requests of them for future issues:

1. Let us little people know we are in it so we don't have a heart attack when we see it:)

2. Maybe attach our blog name to it so people can get to know us more.

A great band from NC..

This band was referred to me from a friend who crafts with us at the colony. Her nephew is in it..

It is quite a haunting song..love the melody and the amazing harmony.

I am really getting into more folk music as it shows the voices and instruments so much more than other music.

Don't get me wrong still love country this is just a new source for me to explore and enjoy.

My daughter and I are really into crafting together. She wants to sell things and we are trying things I think she can excel at and will sell.

This afternoon, after homework we moved onto a new project.

I have seen the clay tags all over the blog universe and thought that is something we could do together. She also added to her pile a few ornaments for the tree later on.

Blatently copying. Is it wrong?

Now, I know we all see things in blog land or at craft shows and go home and make them for ourselves or to sell. Do we copy them exactly? Not usually unless the person says go for it. Usually, we take the item and store it in our memory then go home and use it as inspiration and create something similar but with our personality, our spin on it.

That I am okay with. I am also okay with someone asking me questions on how it is made. I usually tell them but ask that they not resell the items- especially if it is something I have worked long and hard on and spent hours getting it to work just right.

But I draw the line when someone comes into our place of business and takes photographs to copy items.

I do not mean photographs of the booth space in general to share with blog land or just to get the feel of the space.

I mean the ladies this past Friday who came in my booth and others in our place and picked items up and photographed them from many angles.

Pulled things apart at seams a bit to get photographs that show how to sew it.

Ladies who kept taking apart displays to photograph items all the while saying,

" we can make this and sell it ourselves".

That pisses me off to say it bluntly. And it is pretty lucky for these "ladies" that I was not there as I would have probably grabbed their camera, erased the photos, told them to come up with their own original ideas instead of stealing and then told them to not let the door hit them on the way out.

I am angry. I am pissed and I am hurt.

I work long hours on my items and to me this is just stealing.

Will it happen again?

Sure it will.

Why?

Because some people just don't have any tact or integrity.

Sad isn't it?

Well we have decided to put up a sign prohibiting photographs.

This should help. Or at least I hope so.

I mean people will still take ideas and run with them. But they need to be able to do it from memory of seeing it, not from taking in depth spy photos of the items.

With a little style from the Graphics Fairy I think this should say it quite nicely. What do you think?

My little girl has sold her first craft piece and her second and third.

She is always working in my studio with me. And she and her aunt came up with an idea of things to sell that she could do. She and I sat down Sunday to work on them.

She painted them and came up with the whole idea of how to do it.

I merely did the hot glue gun. And I have the huge burn blister on my finger that proved to her she at the age of 6 is not old enough to tackle the glue gun.

Some new ribbon trees...

I showed you a picture previously, of trees I sold at Cameron. Well I had to make some new ones so I would have their lovely colors to sell this season.

I always tend to lean towards creams, browns and tans..

then of course - the traditional red and green. I also did a lime green with hot pink.

Halloween 2011

Well we started the day with school Since we are no longer allowed it seems in American schools to celebrate Halloween..ridiculous if you ask me- Sophie wore the Halloween clothes we had amassed.

Then we got ready for the real event..trick or treating.

Then the rain started. It was already cold but we didn't need the rain.

All in all it was fine by 6pm.

And the witch came out.

Her Aunt also came wearing her witch outfit. Though no one got to see it after she arrived as she spent the evening sitting on the porch in her jacket and covered with a down throw..sad right?

Jack could not make up his mind..go with the werewolf or the skeleton?

The skeleton won out.

It was a great night-. lots of kids came to the house. We scared most and made some cry.

We ran out of candy which means it was busy.

Now, how do we top it next year? hmmmm

Ribbon Trees

We all use trees of many kinds to decorate for Christmas.

We use real and fake pine trees. We use feather trees.

And now you can add Ribbon Trees to that list.

This is a picture of the three that sold at the Cameron Street Fair this fall.

Ridiculous Day....

Today is day two of drug awareness week at Tramway elementary.

It is ridiculous day. Wear crazy clothes and crazy hair.

My kids love this day as you can see.

I promised to show you the stockings up close and personal. Well here they are:

They are done in ticking, a fabric from Ikea that reminds me of old dish towels and of course the tried and true burlap.

I used various fabrics for the cuff then adorned them with trims from my stash.

I love them.

I do have customers who crave bolder, contemporary fabrics with a bit of raz so I will be making some for them and will share them when finished.

We have our Holiday Open House at the Carolina Artists' Colony on November 5 from
4-7 pm. So, of course I need to get this stuff done.
My bestie Liz arrives for a visit around Halloween and her talents will be put to use to help me reset the booth into a winter wonderland.
She rocks at displays.

Snowmen?

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas....well at least in my studio it is. I am in full Christmas mode. There is fabric, stuffing, and lots of Christmas trims everywhere. I placed my order for German glass glitter and when that comes in - well it is totally going to be a sparkly winter wonderland around here.

Here is a sneak peek at my replacement for Autumn pumpkin pillows- they are Snowmen pillows.

Some of the snowman are made from matelasse fabric, the others are from cream burlap. I still have some to do from an old chenille bedspread. After many changes in the pattern they finally came out great.

Soccer anyone?

Yes this takes up a lot of our time: SOCCER.

The season is almost over and it couldn't have happened sooner - thank goodness. I am soccer'ed out.

Here are the munchkins doing their best:

This girl is awesome at soccer. She is fast and has no fear. The only thing holding her back this season is a team that is not up to her level. She gets a bit frustrated with their lack of skills. Oh well, she is awesome.

He is not a lover of soccer. He is not as fearless as his sister but the boy loves to run. So, he plays forward now so he can run the length of that field as fast as those long legs will take him.

We will be taking off from soccer in the spring. Decided fall is enough. After a long winter with rainy weather all the time and it getting so dark so early, once spring comes they hate to go to practice. They just want to play outside. So, this spring we will do just that- PLAY.

We had our Grand Opening at the Carolina Artists' Colony this past Saturday evening. Wow what a great turnout. The food and drink were amazing, the customers came in droves and it was packed all night. And finally meeting and putting vendor faces with their displays was awesome. I sold a ton of these flower pins. I have mostly autumn ones right now but I did up a couple of Halloween and Christmas ones for fun.

Autumn table decor- table runners

You have big meals with family happening soon. They may be just chili or stew or it may be the mother of all meals- Thanksgiving. Wouldn't you like your table to be all decked out for the season? A long beautiful table runner out of burlap is just what that table needs. Burlap is what people think of in Autumn. It has that texture that reminds us of pumpkins, straw bales and scarecrows. But we have taken it a bit farther- we have added ruffles to the ends.

Rustic with a bit of elegance. And your table needs this. See how it looks? The ruffles just add the right finishing touch on the ends - quite unexpected of such a textile.

Time for dinner.

It is autumn and time for many great family meals. Be it Thanksgiving or just a great meal after a football game. Wouldn't you love a pretty table to do this?

This table and the four chairs have been hand painted in Annie Sloan paint followed with a great wax and buff. The chairs have a neutral white, lovely textured fabric on the seats to keep it neutral.

It can be yours for the holidays. Will be in booth on Sunday the 9th.

Some Cameron Show recap pictures

Cameron Street Fair - October 2011 was a great day. The weather was brisk and chilly, the crowds were enormous and it just screamed AUTUMN.

Here are a few pics of the booth:

First here is the area out front of the booth. I made a bunch of cones which are used as gift bags of sorts. You can fill them with halloween candy or Christmas treats.

Then I have the old drying rack that held all of my bags with pins..they sold well. And a table with chairs - furniture did not do as well this time..guess budgets are tight all around.

Inside, we had all of my sisters art (you can see more at Whimsy Art Studio blog). We also had some holiday decor and that beautiful buffet - yea it sold..

The table and chairs all decked out for Thanksgiving.

An end of bed storage trunk with tons of decor. The trunk sold and almost all the pumpkins too.

An awesome pedestal coffee table with the ever popular spindle trees. I'm surprised this table did not sell but if it doesn't sell at the booth then she is coming home with me. I have the perfect spot.

It was a fun show. I still think that we will take off the spring one but then you can never tell.

I don't know what happened to my before pictures. This computer often gets the best of me. So, basically they were your basic maple or mahogany wood. I can't stand to see a piece of wood without paint so out came the brush and they were changed to a happier sort of self.

a new secretary

This was your average oak secretary. It had seen better days and had a really bad stain job on it. I felt she needed a new lease on life..she needed to bring it up a notch.

Simply put this is a chair. I bought a set of 4 chairs and a pedestal dining table only to find when I got home that 2 of the chairs were broken and upon painting this one I realized the other one was "fixed" in a bad way. So, I have the lonely chair and a kick in the butt to pay closer attention from here on out.

mirror or chalkboard?

Remember this lovely, to-die for dresser and mirror?

Well the lovely young lady that bought it did not want the mirror. So, it has sat in my garage for a long time. I kept wondering what to do with it.

Then it hit me- a chalkboard. We took out the mirror - and wow did they make those things heavy back when. We put in a lightweight plywood and then painted it with good old chalkboard paint.

Now I think she is ready to grace a lovely buffet in someone specials dining room. And the big meal holiday is right around the corner..Thanksgiving.

She heads down to the booth tomorrow..

We will never forget nor should we.

What happened 10 years ago seems so fresh not like a decade ago.

We were knocked down, but as Americans do we stood up and took charge.

Nothing can be done to bring back all those lost by the huge devastation.

But as Americans we owe them our lasting respect, honor and remembrance to make their loss never be diminished. Time may past but their actions should always be in the forefront of our minds.

Take time this weekend to remember, to mourn, to thank someone still serving.

Take time to be a proud American.

It still has most of the ornate details on the front.

Etsy or not to Etsy?

I have had some emails from some readers asking if my pumpkins or tote bags that are in my posts can be purchased on etsy or somehow.

I am so flattered as I have never even contemplated doing etsy. I somehow didn't think I was that big.

But it got me to wondering if etsy was a good idea. And honestly, with the booth up and running and doing only two shows a year I figure why not? It would give me a new path to explore - a new journey so to speak.

So, on October 3rd Tattered and Timeless' new etsy shoppe will open.

I hope you will check it out and please give me feedback so I'll know if it is going in the right direction or not.

Some small projects

Here are a few shots of some smaller items in the booth.

These are my bags..and I adore making them. The best part is creating all the flowers with all the different color of fabrics.

Next up is the huge 36 inch sheet music wreath:

A closer look.

I promised a closer look at the booth so here you go.

Since I was painting dining room furniture I thought I'd set it up initially as a dining room. I put the table with 4 chairs in the center under the chandelier. It is topped with one of my fall chicken feeders on a cream burlap table runner.

Next came the hutch that we drug back from Texas.

It has a burlap banner screaming FALL for anyone who is listening. It is loaded up with pedestals and cloches with a splash of orange pumpkins to set off the look.

On the other side I placed the buffet that I adore.

I placed a frame and a cow chalkboard on it along with an upright chicken feeder chandy. I have a large chalkboard made from an awesome mirror frame to take in later.

You'll notice one of my bags hanging back in the corner on the shutter.

The table is the centerpiece along with the huge sheet music wreath hanging above it.

36 inches across - it is huge.

I am hoping all this furniture sells so I can create a new room next..

hmmmm a bedroom, sitting room what shall it be?

Guess whatever furniture I have will dictate that.

Booth reveal

I worked last night late and then went in this morning before opening to fix a few snafus. It is ready and I love it. I love the smaller space - the booth in Lumberton was too large - this is just right as Goldilocks would say.

sisters space

Wanted to share with you my sisters space. First here is her business card I designed for her:

Her style is whimsical with tons of fun.

So we did a fun business card.

I then kept looking at this space she has for her paintings and tried to think of a way for it to SCREAM her.

It was a green wall and we did paint it out neutral but it just was so boring. I can not leave well enough alone so even though we were building my space I kept thinking of how to do hers.

Here is what I came up with, I wanted it to be fun like her so I made a frame of the polka dots and did a sign.

My hubby actually said the sign needed to have some dimension to add something more to the flat wall so he installed it out about 3 inches using spacers.

She is off on Thursday from her job at Michael's and we will be filling her space with her artwork. You are going to love it so don't worry I will be sharing pictures with you.

Spent the morning in the Carolina Artists' Colony working on the booth today. Yes it was windy and raining out but no hurricane keeps me from getting crafting stuff done..haha

remember we started with this ugly room:

then my sister and I painted it to this neutral:

today we did this:

4 basic walls with a bit of trim on the front. (see that amazing tin ceiling?)

then some roof pieces

then some more cross pieces to later hold piano rolls

I still have some tweaking to do in the front trim and then some foofing and a chandelier to hang. That is for another day.

I came home and then painted two signs..

and one for my sisters space..

Kids are back in school now and soccer starts soon so more pictures to come.

Booth update

A quick update on the booth space...I have been very busy making and creating and painting and well just getting through the everyday stuff.

Here is the space as we rented it:

Yes I know the wall color is divine isn't it? Seriously what the heck was the previous store thinking with that combo? Ick And the commercial carpet ? Well going to have to deal with it till I come up with a cheap- good looking alternative.

But here is the space after my sister and I painted it a neutral color:

Tomorrow morning we head in to construct the booth structure. It will be just the beginnings as it will need more tweaking but I will share that with you tomorrow.

This will be a busy week of tweaking, loading stuff in, and then foofing it all to be my style.

back in the booth business?

Well today I met with one of the owners of the newly opening - Carolina Artist's Colony here in Sanford.

He met me so we could pick out my space. Yes, my new space for my newest booth. I am excited to get back into the booth business.

This one is so close to home so no 1 1/2 hour commutes. I can just whip by and check the progress. It is going to be 6 1/2 feet X 11 1/2 feet. It has three walls and the most amazing tall ceilings with wonderful ceiling tin.

I will have to figure out a way to make it "tattered & timeless". But don't worry the wheels are already spinning with ideas.

I will include pictures of it soon and take you with me every step of the way..

So, much fun all the new ventures.

Tomorrow I get to meet with the owners of Swank in Southern Pines to figure out some consignment options.

Fun times abound.

I spent the last few days cutting, sewing and stuffing pumpkins. Today I spent the day putting finishing touches on them, photographing them, tagging them, pricing them and finally- boxing them up for the show in October.

I have to say they certainly put me in the mood for Autumn.

I made six sizes: Jumbo, large, medium, tall&skinny, small and tiny.

Many different patterns from classic to contemporary and many textures from flat to very plush.

I didn't do any cream or white ones this year..might do some later.

What do you think of them?

Did I mention I made over 40 of them?

Yeah onto doing tote bags tomorrow along with house cleaning.

Putting my mark on it

I have always sewn items. But it is hard to mark it as your own creation. I decided this year I wanted my name on my hard work. So, I made some of my own sew tags to put on my creations..

Started out with printing the logo on some iron on fabric sheets, then folding them in half and ironing them closed.

Here is a close up:

Then I basically just sew them in a seam on any of my creative items.

Take this pumpkin for starters,

Yes that is a pumpkin - just the butt of it though.

Here is a sampling of some of the 40+ ones I have sewn.

It may not be autumn yet - but I am doing my part to try and hurry it along.

Dining Room Lovelies

I have had so much fun painting with the Annie Sloan Paint.

I am finished with the secretary it just awaits the wax then some distressing.

I decided I needed the kit so I ordered 3 more quarts of paint, get the two different waxes, the wax brush and the book.

Meanwhile, since it is hotter than hell and muggier than a steam room at a spa; I cleared out the dining table (which itself is horrendous and needs a makeover) and put it to the back screen porch. That way I could bring in some dining room lovelies that need a makeover for Cameron Day.

Here is the hutch - I like to call her Elizabeth :

She has nice curves and lots of details that will shine once painted.

Everything about her screams girlie..well except those knobs..those have to go.

Then we have Eloise, the girlie sideboard:

Here hardware is gorgeous only bad part is one is missing so I have to figure out something for that mishap.

She also has some nice looking gams.

I haven't decided on colors yet. I am leaning towards a grey for the sideboard but we shall see. My paint should arrive this week.

I have a bit of Old White left, then have a full quart of both Duck Egg and Country Grey. I do not like the Country Grey- too green for me so I might just do some custom mixing and make it something I love.

National Night Out 2011

Our little historic district had National Night Out on Tuesday. It was so hot but it went well. Kudos to Ashley Jewell for the AWESOME job she did planning and executing it. Only one thing needs to change- we need to have ours in October like Texas does- it is too dang hot to have this kind of thing in August.

There was a food tent for all.

Of course my daughter who hates hot dogs informed me that she hates our hot dogs that Mr. Paul does them great.

Ashley made things for kids and the theme was Pirates - arrrghhh.

Can't go wrong with this now can you?

Annie Sloan Paint

Well I started painting my first piece of furniture with the infamous Annie Sloan Paint.

It goes on well but mine came out a bit streaky. Is that how it does? Do most of you do two coats? I haven't bought their wax either just wondering if I can use any kind of wax. And if anyone knows - can you use Annie Sloan paint as the first coat then use another kind of paint on top then distress to show a bit of the Annie Sloan? All new to me.

I will say that I ordered the wrong gray- not Paris gray..so if I like how it works I'll have to order some more in the right color.

I am under the weather- nothing like running a fever when it is 104 outside.

So, I"ll be in bed with many tissues.

Some changes are a happening...

Yep I have done it.

I've added more to the already full plate I have.

But this has been bugging me for some time. I have tried to incorporate both family life and business life on this blog.

It has gone from Tattered & Timeless to home for 6 and now it is going back to Tattered & Timeless.

I went and created a new blog for the family. It is still called Home for 6 but it has it's own address and will be more of what goes on at home: kids, vacations and furniture and crafts for our home. Not for sale at a booth or craft fair.

I don't think those who are customers or clients really care to see the day to day of our family and household so I needed to clean it up.

You can still follow here at Tattered & Timeless where I will share my furniture rehabs, crafts made, adventures in the business world I fall into etc.

But I'd also like you to follow the family too at Home for 6.

I will be working on this blog for the next couple of days to get it up where I want it so keep checking back to see what is up...

Burlap busy...

Well it has been a whirlwind of burlap fibers flying all over the place. I am a cutting, sewing, sneezing woman on a mission.

I started out with this:

yes a bolt of burlap.

Then I created these table runners:

some in tan, some in cream

and some in chocolate brown.

All in all they are so much fun; well minus the sneezing from all the fibers floating around.

What have you been working on today?

Oh and there is some fun news. A new pottery/crafters/artisans mall is going to open in town. I am going tomorrow to get some information on how much booths run etc..

I might be back in the booth business after all. Here's wishing it is meant to be.

Summers over...for us anyway.

Well we did it. With only 5 weeks of summer vacation due to kids being on a year round school calendar we did our vacations with a week to spare.

We left for Texas the day after school got out - June 11 for 2 weeks to visit with hubby's family.

His parents live on Lake Belton so the kids had a field day - kinda made it hard to come back to living on land without a lake:(

yeah those Texans are a bit out there but we love them anyway.

I hit lots of stores while shopping with my bestie - Liz.

We hit up Winnie and Tahlulas, Binky LaFayes, Martas shop, Spice in Waco, Bloom-n-Bee, The fredericksburg trade days, Austin City wide garage sale and more.

I'd love to say I got lots of photos like I promised but it was hotter than a witches patootie and lugging around that camera just didn't happen. Sorry.

After our 3 day drive back from Texas we had 2 days to unpack, repack and then hit the road for the beach trip over the 4th of July..

After the beach we got home and had 10 days till school started. We had a house to clean after being gone so long, a yard to mow, and unfortunately an infestation of fruit flies to conquer and kill. We did it all and still managed to have some pool time, just laying around the house doing nothing time and of course school supply shopping.

Today school started up and who would have thought it was merely two weeks ago they were living in bathing suits ?

And my third grader - funny little man- Jack.

I am back to crafting and will be sharing as I go along..

Only 74 days till my October 1 show..

Glad to be back.

Made it to God's country

Well after driving for three days cross country pulling a trailer and a suburban full of kids and a dog..we made it. We are here - in Texas. It is hot but we are ready to hit the ground running.
